Got Gout? OUCH!

Gout is a form of arthritis and is the oldest disease recorded in medical history. Gout was once considered a disease of the Affluent because of the rich foods, cheeses, spirits and beer which the commoner could not afford.
Although it is an inherited disease in which an abnormal purine metabolism results in elevated levels of urine acid in the blood; it can only present its self with outside influences.  Those influences are prevalent in our society today and all ages can be inflicted with Gout. It was once a disease reserved for those over the age of 35 years, however like diabetes, heart disease, high triglycerides and high cholesterol, this is not the case.

American's proportions of soda's, meat, carbohydrates, beer and alcohol are enough to feed a family of four on one plate and one sitting!

Gout is an epidemic and the pharmaceutical companies have all sorts of medications for you to take so that you can continue eating the foods that may be contributing to gout flare ups.

Signs and Symptoms of Gout

Gout can occur suddenly, and there are usually no warning signs other than waking up and your toe may feel a little funny at first, slight stiffness and there may be some slight redness, or your toe may look a little larger.

At this point the symptoms progress quickly and the affected joint becomes, hot, swollen, red and painful to the touch. whether it is the toe, ankle, shin, knee or hands the entire area becomes painful to the touch. Sometimes there can be infection, and a blister may develop.

First- time attack is usually limited to the toe and lasts a couple of days.  Future attacks will not only affect other joints but there is a likely hood of afflictions in multiple joints and can last several weeks.

Although gout is known to suddenly occur from an over indulgence in the wrong foods and alcohol, there are other reasons as well. Trauma, surgery, fatigue, emotional stress, infection, or vascular insufficiency can also trigger a flare up.
